Digital transcription is just an updated expression for audio typing.  The audio is still recorded as always but instead of an old style dictaphone with mini cassettes, the recording is captured digitally and then uploaded to a laptop or PC.  The file can then be sent anywhere in the world either via email or server upload.  So this means you no longer need to physically hand over your taped recordings to someone in the same room as you for audio typing.
